Natural rooting aids

There are many systems and domestic remedies that can be used as rooting aids for stem cuttings. In addition to the potato and the classic willow water, there are many natural alternatives available that either stimulate root growth directly or protect the cuttings from diseases.

Willow Water
Contains natural growth hormones (auxins) that promote root growth. Stem cuttings are placed in willow water for several hours to a day before planting.

Cinnamon
Has strong antifungal properties. The point that is cut from the plant ‘s stem issimply dipped in cinnamon powder to prevent fungal infestation and support healthy root development.

Honey
Has an antibacterial and antifungal effect. Some enzymes in honey can promote root growth. The point of incision can be coated with honey or the stem can be placed in honey water.

Apple Cider Vinegar
Briefly dipping the cut surface in a diluted solution (e.g. 1 teaspoon to 1 litre of water) kills fungi, but should only be used briefly as vinegar can also damage the plant.

Yeast
Containsenzymes that stimulate root growth. Cuttings are placed in a solution of dry yeast and water for about 12 hours.

Aloe Vera
Aloe vera juice has an antiseptic effect and promotes root growth thanks to the enzymes it contains. The incision can be coated withjuice, or the stem can be placed in an aloe vera solution.

Aspirin
Contains salicylic acid, which inhibits the growth of pathogens. One tablet is dissolved in water and the cuttings are placed in it for a few hours.

Potatoes
As already mentioned, potatoesserve as a water reservoir and nutrient supplier. Cuttings are inserted directly into the potato and planted with it.

Do not exaggerate: Too many different remedies can interfere with each other’s effects or even cause harm if the dosage is too high.

Pay attention to dosage: Caution is required, especially with chemical agents (e.g. apple vinegar, hydrogen peroxide), as excessive concentrations can damage the cuttings.

Natural and chemical methods can be combined: For example, the combination ofnatural willow water and chemical rooting powder works well as long as the dosage is correct.
