Our Greatest Environmental Problems

die größten Umweltprobleme

– Globally, the impacts on our ecosystems are severe

Beyond CO₂ emissions and plastic waste, there are several other serious environmental issues that have massive worldwide impacts on ecosystems, climate, and human health:

Other Major Environmental Problems

1. Loss of Biodiversity

  • Biodiversity is declining dramatically: According to WWF, about 69% of global wildlife populations have disappeared since 1970.
  • Causes include habitat destruction (e.g., deforestation), pollution, overexploitation, and climate change.
  • The loss of biodiversity risks ecosystem stability, and with it, access to food, clean water, and other vital resources.

2. Deforestation and Forest Destruction

  • Each year, around 7.3 million hectares of forest are destroyed globally, especially in the tropics for livestock farming, soy cultivation, and palm oil plantations.
  • Forest area is now half the size it was 11,000 years ago.
  • Forests are vital CO₂ sinks and home to countless species. Their destruction accelerates climate change and species extinction.

3. Air Pollution

  • Pollutants such as fine dust, nitrogen oxides, and ozone pollute the air, particularly from transportation, industry, and energy production.
  • Air pollution causes millions of premature deaths each year and contributes to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

4. Water Pollution and Water Scarcity

  • Chemicals, industrial waste, pesticides, and sewage contaminate rivers, lakes, and groundwater.
  • Over one billion people lack access to clean drinking water, and by 2025, two-thirds of the world’s population could be affected by water scarcity.

5. Chemical Pollution

  • Over 350,000 industrial chemicals are in use globally, many poorly regulated.
  • Pesticides kill beneficial insects, and hormone-like chemicals threaten animal and human reproduction.
  • According to recent studies, the planetary boundaries for chemical pollution have already been exceeded.

6. Overfertilization and Soil Degradation

  • Excessive use of fertilizers leads to nutrient overload, harming both soils and waters.
  • Soil quality declines, threatening food production and causing multi-billion-dollar costs.

7. Ocean Health

  • Besides plastic waste, oil spills, chemicals, and overfishing threaten marine ecosystems.
  • Ocean acidification caused by CO₂ uptake damages coral reefs and marine life.

8. Overpopulation and Resource Consumption

  • Global population growth increases pressure on natural resources, worsening issues like waste, water scarcity, and energy demand.

9. Noise, Light, and Radiation Pollution

  • Non-material emissions such as noise, light, and electromagnetic radiation harm people and wildlife, disrupting biorhythms and ecosystems.

Summary

The environmental problems we face today are interconnected and extend far beyond CO₂ and plastic waste.
They affect air, water, soil, biodiversity, and the climate equally.
Many of these issues exacerbate one another and demand global, systemic solutions.
