<\/p>\nNews about migration, conflict, and poverty often leaves us perplexed: Why do people leave their homeland? What does it mean to grow up in bitter poverty? And what can we do here and now to enable families to stay where they call home? In this article, using the example of committed educational projects in Afghanistan, we will explore which factors put children and adults under extreme pressure, which solutions the Agenda 2030 goal of quality education (SDG 4) offers, and how all of us can contribute through concrete action to ensure that people can lead a self-determined life in their homeland. We will explain step by step all backgrounds, terms, and correlations so that even beginners understand the urgency and opportunities of sustainable aid.<\/p>\n
In regions like Afghanistan, currently 69 percent of all people over 15 are illiterate, and 83 percent of them are women. Without basic literacy skills, not only are personal prospects blocked, but entire communities also lose the potential to develop peacefully and economically. Children who must be taught in makeshift tents or in the open air during freezing temperatures\u2014since 44 percent of schools don’t even have permanent buildings\u2014experience instability every day. Education is far more than classroom instruction: It is the key to self-confidence, economic participation, and ultimately peace in regions shaped by conflict.<\/p>\n
For 13 years, the German-Afghan founders of Visions for Children have regularly traveled to Kabul and remote provinces despite the risk of attack and strict checkpoints. They build school buildings, supply desks, blackboards, notebooks, and pens, and train teachers. This long-term commitment sets them apart from short-term relief missions: They create not just spaces for learning but also trust and security. Through conversations with teachers, students, and local partner organizations, solutions emerge that are precisely tailored to local needs and enable people to actively shape their homeland.<\/p>\n

How often have we seen people on the news leaving their homeland sitting on truck tarps? Many people do not flee for adventure, but because their villages offer no prospects. Just as we love our home, so do they love theirs. When we introduce sustainable agricultural techniques, provide clean water and renewable energy, and enable microfinancing, we strengthen livelihoods exactly where they are needed. In this way, fields thrive again, families can found small workshops, and communities flourish\u2014without losing their children, who would otherwise be sent on dangerous routes of flight.<\/p>\n
The UN Agenda 2030 calls for ending poverty and ensuring inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all (SDG 1 and 4). Behind this is the understanding that investment in education not only changes individual destinies but also stabilizes entire societies. Just a single euro invested in early childhood education can multiply later per capita income. And when girls and women learn to read and write, it promotes equality and reduces the risk of political radicalization. Education thus becomes a bridge between cultures and a basis for economic upturn.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you really want something done, just do it yourself!\u201d\u2014this motto of the Earthguardians calls on us not to get stuck in abstract concepts but to take concrete steps. We can take on sponsorships, finance micro- and nano loans, or support \u201ctrain-the-trainer\u201d workshops where local experts share their knowledge. Digital learning centers with offline-capable platforms bring education to remote regions, even without the internet. As much responsibility as possible remains with the people on site\u2014we only provide impulses and resources but let them act independently.<\/p>\n
We Earthguardians are members of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN) and call on everyone to sign the petition and take collective responsibility for our \u201cchildhood home Earth.\u201d If, as adults, we wouldn’t let bulldozers drive through our own living rooms, should we treat our planet less carefully? Let’s help people in Afghanistan, Uganda, and elsewhere to secure their livelihoods, just as we protect our own environments. Let’s support rewilding, the transition to extensive grazing, and sustainable agriculture\u2014these are effective ways to bind CO\u2082 and regenerate the environment.<\/p>\n
