In 2024, 10 million hectares of forest were permanently destroyed worldwide\u2014this represents real, irreversible forest loss, as these areas were converted to agriculture, settlements, or infrastructure. Particularly alarming: 6.7 million hectares of tropical primary forest were lost, with the rest coming from other forest types.<\/p>\n

The CO\u2082 Consequences of Real Forest Loss<\/h2>\n

    Immediate CO\u2082 Release:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    The clearing and destruction of these 10 million hectares of forest in 2024 released about 4.2 billion tons of CO\u2082.<\/p>\n

      Tropical primary forest (6.7 million ha): approx. 3.1 billion t CO\u2082<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Other forests (3.3 million ha): approx. 1.1 billion t CO\u2082<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n

      Loss of Future CO\u2082 Sequestration:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      The permanent loss of these forests means an annual loss of around 7 billion tons of CO\u2082 sequestration capacity.<\/p>\n

        Why Compensation Is Impossible<\/h2>\n

        In theory, the cleared areas could be reforested – but:<\/p>\n

            Young forests sequester only about 9 t CO\u2082\/ha\/year on average.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          • \n

            To offset the annual sequestration loss of 7 billion tons of CO\u2082, we would need:<\/p>\n

              778 million hectares of new reforestation\u20145.2% of the Earth\u2019s land area, equivalent to 22 times the size of Germany.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              The Reality:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

              • \n

                The 10 million hectares cleared are not enough to compensate for the loss if replanted\u2014they would sequester only about 90 million t CO\u2082 per year as young forests.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

                It is physically and ecologically impossible to reforest an area the size of Western Europe every year to offset the annual sequestration loss.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                The Bitter Truth<\/h2>\n

                “Replacing the annual sequestration of 7 billion tons of CO\u2082 by 10 million hectares of forest is practically impossible.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

                The Only Solution: Protection Instead of Compensation<\/h3>\n

                  Preserve existing forests:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Every hectare of protected forest saves hundreds of tons of CO\u2082 sequestration per year.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

                  Stop deforestation:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>The 4.2 billion tons of CO\u2082 released by clearings (2024) are avoidable.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

                  Accelerate restoration:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Restore degraded areas\u2014but as a supplement, not a substitute.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  Conclusion: The Mathematics Is Relentless<\/h3>\n

                  No matter how ambitious, reforestation cannot compensate for the real loss of old forests. Only the immediate halt of deforestation and the consistent protection of existing forests can save the climate.<\/p>\n
