Particularly alarming: 6.7 million hectares of tropical primary forest were lost, with the rest coming from other forest types.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-xs mt-5 text-base font-[500] first:mt-0 dark:font-[475]\">The CO\u2082 Consequences of Real Forest Loss<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"marker:text-textOff list-decimal\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"my-0\"><strong>Immediate CO\u2082 Release:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The clearing and destruction of these 10 million hectares of forest in 2024 released about 4.2 billion tons of CO\u2082.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"marker:text-textOff list-disc\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"my-0\">Tropical primary forest (6.7 million ha): approx. 3.1 billion t CO\u2082<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"my-0\">Other forests (3.3 million ha): approx. 1.1 billion t CO\u2082<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"my-0\"><strong>Loss of Future CO\u2082 Sequestration:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The permanent loss of these forests means an annual loss of around 7 billion tons of CO\u2082 sequestration capacity.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"marker:text-textOff list-disc\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"my-0\">Primary forests: 6.7 million ha \u00d7 734 t CO\u2082\/ha\/year \u2248 4.9 billion t CO\u2082\/year<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"my-0\">Other forests: 3.3 million ha \u00d7 600 t CO\u2082\/ha\/year (estimate) \u2248 2.0 billion t CO\u2082\/year<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23443\" src=\"https:\/\/earthguardian.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Verlust-Regenwald-EN.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/earthguardian.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Verlust-Regenwald-EN.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/earthguardian.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Verlust-Regenwald-EN-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/earthguardian.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Verlust-Regenwald-EN-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/earthguardian.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Verlust-Regenwald-EN-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/earthguardian.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Verlust-Regenwald-EN-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-xs mt-5 text-base font-[500] first:mt-0 dark:font-[475]\">Why Compensation Is Impossible<\/h2>\n<p class=\"my-0\">In theory, the cleared areas could be reforested &#8211; but:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"marker:text-textOff list-disc\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"my-0\">Young forests sequester only about 9 t CO\u2082\/ha\/year on average.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"my-0\">To offset the annual sequestration loss of 7 billion tons of CO\u2082, we would need:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"marker:text-textOff list-disc\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"my-0\">778 million hectares of new reforestation\u20145.2% of the Earth\u2019s land area, equivalent to 22 times the size of Germany.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"my-0\"><strong>The Reality:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"marker:text-textOff list-disc\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"my-0\">The 10 million hectares cleared are not enough to compensate for the loss if replanted\u2014they would sequester only about 90 million t CO\u2082 per year as young forests.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"my-0\">It is physically and ecologically impossible to reforest an area the size of Western Europe every year to offset the annual sequestration loss.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"mb-xs mt-5 text-base font-[500] first:mt-0 dark:font-[475]\">The Bitter Truth<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-xs mt-5 text-base font-[500] first:mt-0 dark:font-[475]\"><strong>&#8220;Replacing the annual sequestration of 7 billion tons of CO\u2082 by 10 million hectares of forest is practically impossible.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mb-xs mt-5 text-base font-[500] first:mt-0 dark:font-[475]\">The Only Solution: Protection Instead of Compensation<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"marker:text-textOff list-disc\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"my-0\"><strong>Preserve existing forests:<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>Every hectare of protected forest saves hundreds of tons of CO\u2082 sequestration per year.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"my-0\"><strong>Stop deforestation:<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>The 4.2 billion tons of CO\u2082 released by clearings (2024) are avoidable.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"my-0\"><strong>Accelerate restoration:<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>Restore degraded areas\u2014but as a supplement, not a substitute.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"mb-xs mt-5 text-base font-[500] first:mt-0 dark:font-[475]\">Conclusion: The Mathematics Is Relentless<\/h3>\n<p class=\"my-0\">No matter how ambitious, reforestation cannot compensate for the real loss of old forests.
