Climate change and the associated warming of the seas are putting massive pressure on seagrass meadows. Scientific studies show that even a rise in maximum water temperatures by three degrees Celsius can triple the mortality rate of Neptune grass. The plant grows very slowly and can hardly adapt to rapidly changing conditions.<\/p>\n The eastern and central regions of the Mediterranean, where temperatures are highest, are particularly affected. There, large parts of the seagrass meadows could disappear as early as the middle of this century. Additional stress factors include invasive species, which spread more easily under warmer conditions and further burden the ecosystem.<\/p>\n If Posidonia meadows die off, not only is an important habitat for many species lost, but also one of the most effective natural CO\u2082 sinks worldwide. The carbon stored in the sediment is then released again and returns to the atmosphere as CO\u2082\u2014with negative consequences for the climate.<\/p>\n This means:<\/p>\n Instead of binding CO\u2082, destroyed seagrass meadows become a source of CO\u2082.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n This creates a vicious cycle: the more meadows disappear, the more CO\u2082 enters the atmosphere\u2014further accelerating climate change.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Yes, there are also positive developments:<\/p>\n In some western parts of the Mediterranean, temperatures may remain below the critical threshold for now, allowing seagrass meadows to survive there.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Studies show that certain adaptation mechanisms\u2014such as increased seed development\u2014could support the species’ survival under specific conditions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n However, it is crucial that we act now:<\/p>\n Protecting and restoring seagrass meadows is essential for climate protection.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n At the same time, we must drastically reduce global emissions to slow the warming of the seas.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Everyone can contribute:<\/p>\n Support protected areas:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Promote and expand protected areas in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Sustainable tourism:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Treat the sea with care\u2014for example, avoid anchoring in seagrass meadows.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Promote restoration:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Support projects to restore seagrass meadows.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Live climate protection:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Reduce your own CO\u2082 footprint to slow global warming.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Posidonia oceanica\u00a0<\/strong>is a true climate protector\u2014but its future is uncertain.
