This makes soil the second largest carbon store on Earth, behind the oceans<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>Why is this important for the climate?<\/h2>\n<p>CO\u2082 is a greenhouse gas: The more CO\u2082 in the air, the warmer it gets on Earth.<br \/>\n<span class=\"dig-1hicw9p1_4-4-0 dig-1hicw9p0_4-4-0 dig-ekabin0_4-4-0 dig-Theme-vis2023 dig-Theme-vis2023--bright dig-Mode--bright In-Theme-Provider\"><span>Soil acts as a \u2018CO\u2082 sink\u2019: when soil stores a lot of carbon, less CO\u2082 remains in the atmosphere \u2013which helps to slow down climate change.
