How does the soil store carbon?<\/h3>\n\n- Photosynthesis: Plants absorb CO\u2082 and convert it into organic matter.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- Roots & plant residues: When plants grow, die or shed their roots, carbon enters the soil.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- Soil organisms: Microbes, fungi and earthworms decompose these remains. Some of the carbon is released again as CO\u2082, while another part remains stored in the soil as humus.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- Humus and organic matter: The stable portion of the carbon is retained in the soil for years or even centuries \u2013this is called carbon storage or carbon sequestration.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Soils around the world store around 1,500 billion tonnes of carbon \u2013 that’s more than in the atmosphere and all plants combined! This makes soil the second largest carbon store on Earth, behind the oceans<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\nWhy is this important for the climate?<\/h2>\n
CO\u2082 is a greenhouse gas: The more CO\u2082 in the air, the warmer it gets on Earth.
\nSoil acts as a \u2018CO\u2082 sink\u2019: when soil stores a lot of carbon, less CO\u2082 remains in the atmosphere \u2013which helps to slow down climate change. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\nBut: when soil is disturbed (e.g. by ploughing, deforestation, draining of moors), stored carbon is released back into the atmosphere as CO\u2082 and re-enters the atmosphere.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nHow can we store more CO\u2082 in the soil?<\/h3>\n
Apply good methods:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Plough little or not at all: this keeps the carbon in the soil.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- Always keep the soil covered: with plants, mulch or catch crops \u2013 this protects against erosion and keeps the soil alive.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- Grow a variety of plants: different plant species promote soil life and carbon storage.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- Use compost and organic fertilisers: they bring new carbon into the soil and strengthen soil organisms.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- Plant trees and shrubs: They store a particularly large amount of carbon and protect the soil<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Avoid bad methods!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Frequent plowing or digging<\/li>\n
- Monocultures without crop rotation<\/li>\n
- Bare, uncovered soil<\/li>\n

What will happen if we don’t take action?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n\n- Soils lose carbon: Intensive agriculture, deforestation and poormanagement practices have already caused soils worldwide to lose 50\u201370% of their original carbon. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- Accelerated climate change: This carbon loss has caused about a quarter of all man-made greenhouse gas emissions<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- \nSoils become infertile: Without humus, plants cannot grow as well, and the soil becomes more susceptible to erosion and flooding<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
